A Storyboard artist specialises in creating storyboards in print and/or digital form to give visual description and direction to a written script. A storyboard artist uses pencil drawings and/or graphic design techniques to visualize and create imagery for the storyboards.

A storyboard artist is also known as an Illustrator. In the past, most Illustrators created their artworks by hand and pencil, nowadays, it is becoming more common for Illustrators to begin and finish their work on computers using drawing software and digital pencils. For motion pictures, some filmmakers prefer that storyboard artists use computer programs designed to create frame-accurate storyboards.

Using CGI for storyboarding provides a more accurate imagery and can also save production time, especially in animated video.
