Video Production – Independent Film
Independent Film and Filmmakers
Filmmaking is the process of making a film. The nature of the film, and the budget, determine the size and type of crew used during filmmaking. Many Hollywood films employ a large cast and crew and have complicated computer generated imagery (CGI), while a low-budget or independent film may be made with a skeleton crew and of course much less cost. Independent filmmaking takes place all over the world using different technologies and techniques.
Independent Filmmaking usually takes place outside of the studio system. Since the introduction of DV technology, the production and usage of video has become more achievable for budget, or independent filmmakers. Filmmakers can conceivably shoot and edit a movie, create and edit the sound and music, and mix the final cut on a home computer. However, while the means of production may be democratized, financing, distribution, and marketing remain difficult to accomplish outside the traditional system. Most independent filmmakers rely on film festivals to get their films noticed and sold for distribution. However, the Internet has allowed for relatively inexpensive distribution of independent films; many filmmakers post their films online for critique and recognition. Although there is little profitability in this, a filmmaker can still gain.
Independent Filmmakers can conceivably shoot and edit a movie, create and edit the sound and music, and mix the final cut on an enhanced personal computer. However, while the means of production may be more commonly achievable, the financing, distribution and marketing for offline use still remains difficult to accomplish outside the traditional system. Most independent filmmakers rely on film festivals to get their films noticed and sold for distribution, although, with the arrival of internet-based video outlets such as YouTube the evolution of publicly broadcasting independent filmmaking has changed the film making atmosphere in ways that are still to be determined.
